PhD Student Kevin Hermstein Wins 2024 National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship Award
Kevin Hermstein, a first-year electrical engineering MS/PhD student in the Wireless and Mobile Networking Lab has won a 2024 National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship award. He was chosen based on his academic achievements in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) from a total of 3392 applicants. The NDSEG Fellowship Program is a competitive fellowship that is awarded to outstanding students who are pursuing a Doctoral degree aligned to the Department of Defense services Broad Agency Announcements (BAAs) in research and development. It is sponsored by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), the Army Research Office (ARO), and the Office of Naval Research (ONR) under the Office of the Under Secretary for Research and Engineering.
Kevin received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering (Cum Laude) from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2023, where he was awarded the AFCEA Cyber Studies merit scholarship, Presidential Scholarship, George Corcoran Memorial Scholarship, and Jean and Everett Dillard Scholarship. He was also initiated into the Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society in 2021. He received the Evergreen Fellowship from Columbia Engineering in Fall of 2023.
His current research is in Beyond-5G networks. Specifically in mmWave, spectrum sharing, and joint communication and sensing. He also has interest in full-duplex systems and their applications. This work is done within the FlexICoN project, along with fellow NDSEG recipient Alon S. Levin.
