AT&T Virtual University Research Initiative (VURI) Award

KohliProfessors Zoran Kostic and Gil Zussman received a Virtual University Research Initiative (VURI) award from AT&T Lab Research to conduct research on supporting smart intersections with 5G technology. The research will be conducted in collaboration with the team of Dr. Rittwik Jana at AT&T Labs Research.

Typical traffic intersections in dense urban areas such as Manhattan could have dozens of vehicles and pedestrians at any given time. Managing smooth traffic flow and ensuring safety in such an environment is a major challenge. This seed project will explore how 5G networks with gigabit communication bandwidth, ultra-low latency, and edge computing infrastructure can enable efficient management of intersections. It will include data collection and experiments on the deployed pilot of the COSMOS testbed.
